Success Story - Tom and Jerry

This is Tom and Jerry's former foster mom with an update on the big orange kitties that were featured on the blog in November. We got to have Tom and Jerry in our home for just over a month, and we were so happy to see the boys come out of their shells.

At first, having Tom and Jerry was like having two invisible cats. They pretty much just hid in the closet for the first couple days. Since one of their owners died and the other went into an assisted living home, Tom and Jerry have been bounced around a bit. They were stressed at the facility and we expected them to be nervous around us, so we weren't surprised.

Jerry was the first to test the waters. He crept around us, sniffing carefully, ready to bolt at the first sign of danger. Tom was much more cautious. For the first several days - more than a week - he wouldn't let us get too close to him. He came out to eat, but wasn't interested in more. But one day, I was sick in bed, and to my surprise, Tom jumped up to keep me company! Our guess is that Tom wanted to check us out, but he was frightened when we moved. Since I was staying so still, he finally got up the courage.

Once we broke the ice, both Tom and Jerry were eager to get affection, though they were always skittish and were scared by loud noises or sudden movements.

Tom is actually more insistent in demanding attention than Jerry!

And we have some exciting news to report! Tom and Jerry were recently adopted by a loving family. I'm sure they're in the lap of luxury right now, settling into their new home. They've had a long journey and they deserve lots of pampering and love.

Success stories like Tom and Jerry are what keep me going as a volunteer for HSEC. And I'm sure that Tom and Jerry are grateful for all of the staff and volunteers that helped them heal their broken hearts. Personally, I couldn't be happier that an organization like HSEC is around to take care of kitties like Tom and Jerry, who might be more difficult to place but who are equally deserving of a secure and happy home.

Purrfect Post Cat of the Month - Olive

Meet Olive!!

For the month of February we've decided to spotlight Olive one of the loveliest cats to ever come through the HSEC! This sweet kitty is 4 years old and although she may look like your average black and white cat in the picture above, she actually has a beautifully detailed calico coat. The white patch around Olive's neck looks like a perfect little handkerchief which really suits what a prim and proper cat she is! Hands down, Olive is the cleanest cat at the HSEC who loves to keep her space organized.

Olive came to us as an abandoned cat, luckily a staff member saw her wandering through the wooded area on our property and put out some food for her. It took a while to finally catch her but Olive has now been with us since the summer of 2011 and it's time she found her forever home! Just one look into those beautiful eyes and you'll fall in love!

In keeping with her tidy habits, Olive is a very particular cat. She likes to eat at the same time every day and she loves to show affection for her humans when it's on her own terms. She is not always in the mood to be picked up and held but when she is she sure loves to cuddle! Olive's new family will need to have some patience with her but in the end we know it will pay off because she really is a sweetheart!

Olive has been spayed, dewormed, tested for FIV/FeLV, and is up to date on all vaccines. Her adoption fee is $70 which includes a bag of Science Diet adult cat food and one free month of pet insurance!

HSEC's Foster Valentine: Rocky

Happy Valentine's Day from your friends at HSEC!

As you know, Valentine’s Day is one day out of the year devoted to expressing to your loved ones how much they mean to you. But who’s to say this day is just for humans?! In light of this special day we'd like to share a wonderful success story with you about one of our dogs currently in foster care, Rocky! Rocky and his foster mom, Emily, have shown us firsthand how powerful and healing affection can truly be.

Rocky, along with his siblings, was brought to the Humane Society as a puppy.

His siblings were quickly adopted but unfortunately Rocky never found a home due to illness. This sweet pup had stomach problems that just would not go away. The vet couldn’t determine the cause of his illness and the shelter environment he was living in was not able to provide him with the specialized and unique treatment he needed.

After unsuccessful attempts of numerous treatments, Rocky was eventually placed in a foster home with hopes that a different environment would aid in a positive recovery. One of our outstanding foster parents, Emily, took Rocky into her home with loving arms, providing him with care he needed. Special meals, such as ground beef and rice, a warm bed, and an abundance of toys helped lead Rocky on his quick path of recovery.

Shortly after being in his new foster home, Rocky’s stomach issues virtually vanished! Emily not only freed Rocky from his sickness but she also house trained him and taught him basic doggie etiquette. A new environment and different foods may have significantly aided in recovery and what Rocky needed most was to feel loved.

Here is what Emily had to say in her most recent Rocky update:

"Rocky has shown a knack for being a true southern gentleman. All he requires is a comfortable warm bed, lots of windows to look out of when he is not entertaining guests, a doggie door so he may maintain his clean manners, 3 meals a day of quality southern doggie chow, and lots of toys to transport around his domain. Doggie buddies would welcome to play with along with additional doggie etiquette lessons. Favorite treats include bits of cheddar and american cheese."

Blog Dog of the Month - Blossom

Happy February!!

Meet Blossom, our blog dog of the month!

As you can see from her picture Blossom is one happy dog! She always has a smile on her face, a wag in her tail, and lots of kisses to give! She came to HSEC in the Spring of 2011 with her litter of three puppies who have all since been adopted. Blossom was an outstanding mom but unfortunately she used up all her energy caring for her pups leaving her in bad shape. When we first met Blossom she was very underweight and had a variety of skin problems. Luckily we're happy to report that Blossom has recovered beautifully and all she needs now is her forever home!

We suspect that Blossom spent most of her young life having back to back litters of puppies and that this sweet girl suffered a good deal before she came to us. Despite her rough start Blossom is a staff favorite because she's put her past behind her and loves just about everybody! Blossom is currently in a foster home where she is learning to be the best dog she can be and we hope she'll find her forever home very soon!

Because Blossom is a pit bull mix and considered a "bully breed" the HSEC prefers that she go to a home with prior pit bull experience. We also require a home check and vet check before adoptions can be processed and there are no same day adoptions for dogs like Blossom. These policies are in place to ensure that our bully breed dogs are going to wonderful and safe new homes with owners who are truly committed to loving and caring for their new pets!

January was an interesting month for HSEC. Because we have (for now) reduced intake so that we can decrease the number of residents at the facility, we only took in 10 new animals, and we adopted out 23. 30% of our adoptions were off-site this month.

We've decreased the number of our residents due to financial constraints, which you can read more about in this post. The decrease is intended to be temporary, and we would greatly appreciate your continued support so that we can return to full operating capacity.

2011 Year In Review

HSEC continued to serve the community in 2011, providing a temporary safe haven for homeless dogs and cats. Like you, we look back over last year and try to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, making New Year’s Resolutions of new goals to strive for in 2012.

Due to financial constraints, we underwent some significant changes during the year. The most noticeable difference is that the number of animals housed at the facility has been decreased. We hope that this is a temporary situation and we know that with your help we can be up and running again at normal capacity.

We had a lot of successes in 2011 and we’re looking forward to 2012. Here on the blog, you can look forward to more educational content, including tips for adopting a new animal, information about common animal diseases, and even instructions for training your dog. We will continue to highlight a Blog Dog and Purrfect Post Cat of the Month and to check in with our fosters and volunteers. We’re adding a Wordless Wednesday post and more pictures of our adorable adoptable animals, and we’re making plans to get some inside views on HSEC from staff and volunteers.

We’ve set our goals high, but we know we can reach them! A huge thank you to our readers. You can help us spread the word about HSEC and about the HSEC blog through Facebook, Twitter, and your favorite social networking site. Follow us on Twitter @HSEC.

Purrfect Post Cat of the Month - Mona

Meet Mona!

As you can see Mona is a gorgeous black and white cat with glowing golden eyes! She is completely black with the exeption of a small white diamond of fur on her chest, not quite a tuxedo but not all black either. As you may have gathered from her name, Mona loves to chat! Most of the time she's a quiet and relaxed kitty but when it's time to eat she'll be sure to let you know how hungry she is and remind you how long it's been since you last filled up the food bowl! Mona loves treats more than any other cat we've ever seen at the HSEC. Just shake a bag of treats and you've got her undivided attention right away!

Mona has been living at our facility for some time now and we'd love to see her find a foster home or better yet, a forever home! Poor Mona has never been a huge fan of living with us because she'd prefer to be the only cat in the cat palace. Volunteers and potential adopters often mistake Mona's temper for meanness when if fact she's just hissing at the other cats she sees around her. This sweet lady has a lot of cuddles in her, she just needs to let them out in a home environment.

Welcome to Wordless Wednesdays!

On Wednesdays we will be posting a photo with no words, and let the photo do the talking! For our first Wordless Wednesday, we are actually going to use some words to talk about animal photography. Animals are fun, and tricky sometimes, to photograph.

Trying to capture a kitten while playing is challenging!

Here are some tips for pet photography:

Be patient and take lots of pictures, it might take a lot of trial and error to get one good shot but it will be worth it.
If your pet is in motion constantly, use a fast shutter speed to capture them in action without the blur
Let your pet play or amuse themselves briefly, and when you are ready to snap a picture, call their name or whistle to get their attention and have them look alert. For dogs, this turns out well because their ears perk up and it makes them look very cute!
Fill up the frame and take close ups. Capturing those “puppy dog” eyes makes people melt!
Take pictures outside or in a well lit room so you don’t have to use the flash, which can often frighten your pet, cause red-eye, or make the picture look harsh.
Make the focal point of your pictures the pet’s eyes and get on their level by sitting on the ground or lying on the floor
Let your pet explore the camera if they are curious, and you can take close up pictures while they do!
Use treats, toys, or “funny noises” to get your pets attention or have them look in a certain direction

Blog Dog of the Month - Remi

Meet Remi!

The HSEC blog volunteers wanted to make sure we had a good start in 2012 so we've selected Remi as our January Blog Dog of the Month! This sweet shepherd mix has been looking for a new home for some time now and we think January is her lucky month!

Remi is a big dog with a lot of heart. Based on her good looks and loyalty we suspect she's got some German Shepherd in her family. Remi tends to be a little bit shy at first, especially around men, but after just a few moments she'll stick by your side and never forget you.

If you're looking for a dog who is just as ready for a home as you are for a pet then this is your girl! Remi gets along well with other dogs, she is housebroken, and what a breeze to walk on a leash! This lovely lady has already been spayed and is up to date on all vaccines. She has been dewormed and is on heartworm and flea prevention. Her adoption fee is $100. Christmas Wrapping with Linda and Joan

Volunteers wrap presents at Greenville Mall

“Hello, this is Joan Pollock from the Humane Society.”

If you’re a volunteer for HSEC, you’ve probably gotten at least one call from Joan Pollock. And you’ve probably found yourself telling Joan that you’d be happy to fill whatever volunteering opportunity she’s phoning about. Joan just has that effect on people.

“Blame it on Joan,” says Linda Anselmi, who has been involved as a volunteer with HSEC for eight years. It was Joan who first got Linda involved with the fundraising committee, of which both women are members. Linda and Joan, along with Stella Strickland and Sylvia Harrison, coordinate the gift wrapping fundraiser held annually at Greenville Mall.

Linda and Joan do much of the on-site work, with Joan generally on the day shift and Linda there during the evening. They are joined by an army of volunteers, including students from Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston, ECU students, and - for the first time this year - members of the Greenville Newcomers Club. General HSEC volunteers also assist with gift wrapping, and “we drag all our friends out too,” Joan says. The amused gleam in her eye indicates that she’s not speaking purely metaphorically.

Historically, gift wrapping has often been the year’s largest fundraiser for HSEC, though in recent years it is second behind Canine Crawl. The mall has always been exceptionally generous in providing space and support for the fundraiser. Major thanks for this must be given to Nathan Kelly, the mall manager, who is also an HSEC volunteer.

Wrapping began this year on December 3rd and continued through Christmas Eve. This year Greenville Mall sponsored the first Saturday of gift wrapping by paying for all wrapping which occurred on that day.

The scene at the gift wrapping table is generally frenetic, especially close to Christmas. Many of the volunteers are young, though a cross section of the community is also represented. “People seem to like the service,” Linda says, adding that they often see repeat customers. For shoppers, it’s a nice way to check a chore off the Christmas to-do list as well as donate to a worthy cause.

HSEC has run the wrapping booth for at least ten years, taking the area over from a professional wrapping operation. And Joan has been involved with wrapping since the beginning. When asked how long she’s been a volunteer for HSEC, she frowns and says, “longer than I can remember.”

Joan has always had dogs - “I told my parents they followed me home,” she says, laughing. She started to help with the dogs before HSEC had a facility, then began fostering. Her speciality was puppies, and she estimates that she’s fostered over one hundred dogs. Slowly she became more involved with HSEC, eventually serving as a

board member for a time.

Like Joan, Linda gradually found herself taking on more opportunities with HSEC. Linda became aware of the organization through her involvement with a Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) rescue group. Her family owns two Shelties. Linda decided to devote more of her volunteering energy to local causes, and began volunteering for HSEC. Her favorite fundraiser is the book sale, which she and Joan are also involved with coordinating. When she’s not volunteering, she enjoys writing.

Joan also has hobbies outside of her work with HSEC, most notably her love of travel. She recently returned on a Mediterranean cruise and is planning trips to Arizona and China. After another successful gift wrapping fundraiser, Joan and Linda have both earned a little time to relax.

Purrfect Post Cat of the Month - Lucy

For the month of December we've selected a special little lady to be our

Cat of the Month: Lucy!!

Lucy is a darling black cat who came to HSEC with her two sisters who have since been adopted. She loves to play and makes the most adorable chirping noises you've ever heard! We call her our little Purr Monster because once you start showing Lucy some attention she just can't stop purring up a storm!

Lucy recently returned from a loving foster home which she shared with one dog and several cats. She did great in a home environment and got along well with her other four-legged housemates. Her foster Mom had some wonderful stories to share about her experiences with Lucy:

"Lucy is a cautious kitty. Though maybe cautious isn’t the right word for it. It’s more that she doesn’t want to do anything that isn’t her idea.

She has the SOFTEST fur! And she keeps herself immaculately clean. She’s also ladylike about her food and prefers to graze throughout the day rather than eat all at once.

She’s very playful and gets the “night time crazies” (as they’re called at our house), zipping around from room to room with a half-wild look in her eyes. It’s a lot of fun to play with her when she’s all wound up.

She loves to lie in the windowsill and look out; it’s what she did most of the day."

Tips for a Happy Holiday

It’s a busy time of year, but it’s important to make sure that your home is safe and happy for your pets. So visit the HSEC gift wrapping station in front of Belk’s inside the Greenville Mall, and take some time to read these handy holiday tips.

Hang breakable ornaments high on your Christmas tree where animals can’t reach, and set up the tree so that your animal can’t knock it over. Only water the tree with plain water - no preservatives or chemicals. It’s common for pets to drink out of the watering bowl, so cover it if you can!
Don’t put wrapped boxes of food under the tree - those noses are very sensitive.
Avoid tinsel and clean up ribbons after unwrapping gifts. Both can cause serious problems if ingested.
Keep light cords out of reach so they can’t be chewed on.
Always supervise animals around lit candles.
Don’t give out too many treats and make sure your pets won’t get into bones, trimmed fat, skin, discarded giblets, or those tasty little strings you used to tie up the turkey.
Be careful to keep poisonous plants and decorations out of reach. Mistletoe, lillies, and some ivies are poisonous. Poinsettias, amaryllis, and hibiscus can cause severe digestive problems. Potpourri can cause skin and oral damage and can also be poisonous.
Take standard party precautions. Cats in particular - even the friendliest - won’t want to be in the middle of all that noise. Keep shy animals isolated in a quiet, calm room with water and some toys to occupy them. If your pet is a true party animal, make sure that partygoers are treating them with kindness and common sense. No handfuls of greasy treats, no chocolate, and especially no drugs or alcohol.

Giving pets as gifts

Dogs and cats are cute - puppies and kittens are even cuter. And they’re pretty much a rainbow explosion of adorability when they’re sitting underneath a Christmas tree wearing a big red bow.

But you know what’s not so cute? The increased numbers of animals that are turned into shelters after the holidays are over. Because a pet is about more than a photo op, it’s a 10-18 year commitment of your time, energy, love, and money.

So what if you still want to get someone a pet for Christmas? Well, it might be the perfect gift - as long as you follow these important guidelines.

Do not surprise someone with a pet - especially an adult!

Even if you are sure that your loved one wants to get a pet, it should be up to the pet owner to decide if they are ready to take on the responsibility. Additionally, the bond between a pet and an owner is a special thing. Choosing a pet is very personal, and it’s important that the prospective adopter actually be present when the animal is chosen.

It’s best to give a pet a few weeks before or at least a week after the holidays.

Holidays are stressful enough for the people and pets already in a home. New decorations, family members hanging around, parties, noise - all of these things can freak out even the most well-adjusted cat or dog. Bringing a new animal into a home is also stressful. Don’t make it hard on yourself or your new furry friend by combining stressors.

Ok, so you’ve thought it through and you’ve decided that it would be appropriate to give someone a pet as a gift. Here’s how to do it.

Give the recipient a large wrapped box full of pet supplies and a coupon for the animal of their choice. It’s ok to offer to go with them to pick out the pet, but don’t push. It might take a couple of visits for the adopter to find their perfect fit.

If you absolutely must give a pet during the holidays, remember:

Plan on spending quiet time at home so bonding with the new owner can occur and the pet will learn that home is a safe environment.
Clean up all the present wrappings before introducing the new pet. The new pet should be the last present received.
No parties at your home and limit the time you are away from home.
Make your house pet safe.

Changes at HSEC - and how you can help.

If you come to the HSEC facility, you will see cats and dogs who are healthy, alert, and energetic - ready to become pets. The HSEC is the region’s largest no-kill facility and we’re proud of the work that we do. But the economic downturn has also hurt animals, and we need help to maintain a high quality of life for those in our care and to increase their chances for adoption.

The good news is that you can help! Your support is essential to the Humane Society’s continued success in providing exceptional care for the animals we serve.

The HSEC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which has been in operation since 1978. rescuing animals from Pitt County and the surrounding areas. Thanks to you, we see an average of 400 adoptions per year! Through adoptions and transfers from local county shelters, HSEC helps decrease local euthanasia rates and assists in reducing the pet overpopulation problem.

Our facility can take care of up to 100 animals at a time but can’t operate without community support - financial gifts, donations, and volunteers. We receive no funds from city, state, or national government, nor do we receive financial assistance from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

Due to financial restraints, HSEC has had to decrease animal intake by 25 percent and eliminate supplemental programs. We’ve come up with temporary ways to reduce our expenses: decreasing the facility’s hours of operation and reducing animal capacity by 40 percent.

But here’s where you come in. Community support is vital to the facility’s status and the animals’ futures. You can help the Humane Society return to full operating capacity. It costs the Humane Society $5 per day per animal to provide shelter, a clean environment, food, and basic medical care. If you can help care for an animal for a year, month, or even just a day, your support is needed.

In Pitt County alone 2500 animals are euthanized yearly. With your assistance more animals will have a second chance at life.

Blog Dog of the Month - Wiggles

Happy December Everyone!

Meet Wiggles!

This month we've selected Wiggles to be our blog dog of the month! She is a sweet pit bull terrier mix who is on the small side and full of energy! She was rescued from a hoarding case in Pitt County this past summer and has been with us ever since. Wiggles is mostly white with brindle spots and a brindle face, she is just too cute!

Wiggles is a special gal who needs someone with a little extra time on their hands to give her the attention she needs. You see, Wiggles suffers from separation anxiety and when the staff and volunteers go home in the evening Wiggles' little heart breaks in two. When her human friends come back in the morning she is SO excited to see them she just can't stop jumping and wiggling around in circles!

Aside from wiggling, one of Wiggles other favorite things is treats! After just two milkbones Wiggles was sitting on comand and after long walks her favorite thing to do is relax on her doggie bed with a snack between her paws. (Wiggles thought you should know how much she loves treats just in case you would like to buy her a Christmas present...)

Gift Wrapping!!

The holidays are finally here and WE are here to help you wrap all those gifts you bought!! Volunteers for the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina will be at the Greenville mall every day from now until Christmas Eve wrapping gifts and spreading holiday cheer!

Now through December 24th we will be ready to assist you with all of your gift wrapping needs from 11am until 8pm each day! The cost is based on gift size ranging from $3 to $10 and the proceeds go to help the animals at HSEC! Our table is located outside of the women's Belk right near the North Pole.

This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and we hope you'll come out and support us!

Not buying any gifts this month? Please consider helping the Humane Society in another way! It costs us $5 per day per animal to provide the necessary care to our canine and feline residents so we could really use your help! Blog Dog of the Month - Ezy!!

It's time for our third and final installment about Ezy!! Ezy has been our Blog Dog of the Month for October AND November and unfortunately this sweet dog is still waiting to find his forever home! Ezy has been living at the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina longer than any of our other current residents, 18 months!! Wouldn't you say it's his turn to find a forever family?

Mixed breed dogs often come into the facility, and sometimes these mysterious mixes create some uniquely interesting animals. It can be very rewarding to adopt a mixed breed dog who will fit perfectly into your family. Like Ezy (pronounced Easy), our Blog Dog of the Month.

Everyone seems to have a different opinion about Ezy’s genetic background. He definitely has some Shepherd in him, but the rest is anyone’s guess - Akita? Chow? Brown bear? He’s not a very tall dog, but he has a powerful barrel chest and neck and beautiful thick fur. In fact, it’s hard to tell where the fur ends and Ezy begins.

Ezy is not exactly the athletic type. He gets very excited to go on a walk, but he’s been known to sit down and refuse to go another step without a short break! Especially when it’s hot, it’s easy for him to become overheated under all that gorgeous fur. Ezy would do well in a family who took him on short walks, but he would probably not be a good match for someone who wants to take their dog jogging.

Adopting a mixed breed dog also ensures that your dog is totally unique! Ezy is such a handsome boy, though it’s hard to see that clearly when he’s in his run. In the sunshine, the brown highlights glow in his black coat. There’s definitely no one else who looks like Ezy!

In the end, it doesn’t really matter what Ezy “is”. All that’s important to know about Ezy - or any dog - is the singular set of traits that define his personality. Ezy is shy, and sweet, and loves attention. He tends to have favorite people, and he loves his favorites completely.

He’s an amazing dog just waiting for the right person to come along and take him home.

Blog Dog of the Month - Ezy!!

It's time for the next installment of our 3-part series on Blog Dog of the Month - Ezy! This sweet guy is still looking for his forever home so, please, read his story below and help spread the word about the incredible dog!

When our Blog Dog of the Month Ezy (pronounced Easy) first came to the facility, staff and volunteers quickly learned that he needed some extra attention. Like many residents of HSEC, Ezy was a stray, so we don’t know very much about his background. We have to take our cues from his behavior and can only guess at the experiences that shaped his personality.

And Ezy has a big personality! But at first, you wouldn’t know it. Sometimes it takes Ezy a little bit of time to warm up to new people, especially men. Once he gets over his initial shyness, he loves attention. He loves to have his ears and chest scratched, and he’s a leaner - he’ll push against your legs as he totally relaxes into the attention.

Ezy’s cautiousness has sometimes worked against him when visitors come to HSEC. Like most shy dogs, he can be easily overwhelmed by new people who approach too quickly.

When meeting any dog, but especially a shy dog, it’s important to move slowly and speak softly. Try squatting down to their level and let them approach you. Don’t make eye contact right away, as dogs can perceive this as aggressive. Once the dog seems comfortable, pet them on their chest. Bringing your hand over the top of a shy dog’s head can be scary to them, and some dogs don’t like to be touched in a place they can’t see, like their hind end.

If you give a dog a bad first impression, don’t worry - you can overcome it with some time. Just retreat and start over again with the techniques suggested above. But it’s far better to use patience at the first meeting so that you can easily form a connection with a new dog. Go slowly and the dog will learn to trust you.

Volunteers and staff know that it just takes a little bit of patience to get close to Ezy, but once you do, he’s yours forever. So come out to the facility and spend some time in the play yard with Ezy. Your reward could be a lifetime friend!

Purrfect Post Cats of the Month - Tom & Jerry

It's time again for a special HSEC blog post spotlighting our feline friends! This month we have double the fun with two brothers, Tom and Jerry!

Tom Jerry

Who doesn't love a fat orange cat?! We have TWO! Tom and Jerry were adopted as kittens by an elderly couple and unfortunately their human mom passed away in the Spring. Their human dad then went to stay in an assisted living facility which is how they came to us at HSEC.

Tom and Jerry are both gentle giants and when they first arrived at our facility it was a bit of a shock for them. They were both very afraid of the staff and would escape from their cages every time they had the chance! Fortunately over the past few months both cats have really come out of their shells.

Jerry is a sweet boy who can still be a bit shy at first but he really does love attention once you get him out to play! When volunteers take him into the HSEC cat play area he struts his stuff and and head butts them for attention! Jerry also loves to roll over on his side and, a sure sign he wants you to pet him! Jerry is a classic orange tabby, the smaller of these two brothers.

Tom is one big gorgeous ball of fur! His coat is a rich tabby mixed with reds and oranges, what a looker! Tom absolutely loves chin rubs and being petter, although, like his brother, he can still be a bit shy when you approach him at first. Once he realizes you are there to play and pet him he'll start to purr right away!

These awesome cats have been living at HSEC for several months now and we'd really like them to go to a new forever home where they can get the endless love and attention they deserve! Tom and Jerry have been together forever so we would prefer that they went to the same home if possible.

All cats with the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, dewormed, on flea prevention, and tested for FIV/FeLV. Adoptions come with a small bag of Hill's Science Diet and one month of free pet health insurance!

Foster Home Fun - Ginny ADOPTED!

HSEC relies on the generosity of volunteers who not only donate their time at our facility, but also those who open their hearts and homes to care for our animals in need on a temporary basis as foster parents.

We are always looking for more volunteers so we can continue to build our foster network and we'd like to share a special foster story with you now!

Ginny's Story:

As you can see from her picture, Ginny is quite a unique American Pit Bull Terrier Mix! She has a lovely brindle coat but instead of the regular black with brown stripes, Ginny is a reverse brindle with a gorgeous caramel coat feathered with black stripes. What a beauty!

This sweet dog was found as a stray in Falkland and lucky for her someone picked her up and cared for her until we had room at HSEC!

In late August of 2011 Hurricane Irene was on the horizon so HSEC staff made the difficult decision to evacuate all the animals at our facility. We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our local Pitt County community when we successfully evacuated every single animal into a temporary foster home!

Ginny was lucky enough to find a weekend home with Jeremy and Sarah who absolutely fell in love with this sweet canine and were sad to bring her back. In October they heard we were having a Foster Parent Orientation and decided they would like to help out again! Because Ginny had been displaying some signs of stress in our shelter environment we agreed that Ginny would again be a good candidate for foster care with Jeremy and Sarah. They were so excited and came to pick Ginny up just a few days after orientation!

Here is the first installment of their story:

"We chose to be foster parents because we wanted to have an animal in the house again. Giving an animal a loving home with attention and affection can enrich the animals lifestyle as well as our own. Caring for Ginny gives us a sense of well-being, knowing that we are giving her a pleasant environment and a break from life at the shelter. She has been quick to learn the trick “shake”, adding to her repertoire of commands and has adapted to our house rules.

Recently, Ginny meet the neighbors dog and played well with him. It released a different kind of energy and she was more tuckered out then when I take her on a 3 mile run. We feel like she would benefit from doggy companionship, however, this was only the first encounter. We hope to try to introduce her to other dogs in the near future. On a walk we saw a friend and his 5-year-old son; Ginny didn’t react differently when the boy was petting her. The difficulty we are working on is her jumping habit, which occurs when she gets overly excited.

At the grocery store we picked up a beef bone from the butcher and she really enjoys it. It keeps her occupied for longer periods of time. She also really enjoys playing with the ropes. When she gets really worked up she will run from room to room, back and forth, like she is playing tag with herself. She is a great exercise friend and doesn’t pull on the leash. She is completely house broken and a complete ham as she lays on her bed while we write this message.

One weird action we have noticed is that Ginny always accompanies us when we go to the bathroom!"

The Results are In! October 2011 Stats

October was a busy time at HSEC. We took in 43 new critters, the most of any month this year, and 30 pets left the facility for their forever homes. Here’s a quick look at what happened in the facility last month, but first, a little terminology.

An animal can enter the shelter one of five ways.

Abandonment: dropped anonymously at the facility. This irresponsible behavior is not only extremely dangerous to the animal, it is illegal!
Returned: the result of a failed adoption where the animal is returned.
Stray: the animal is found with no indication of its ownership.
Surrendered: the owner of the animal surrenders it to the facility.
Transferred: the animal is brought in from another group or facility, often the Pitt County Animal Shelter. Animals are often transferred between shelters in order to increase their opportunity for or likelihood of adoption.

Here’s the breakdown for October:

Cats:

32 cats entered the facility.

4 abandoned
0 returns
0 strays
15 surrenders
13 transfers

We had the opportunity to transfer in several cats this month, including more than one litter of kittens! We love to cooperate with other groups in the area for the benefit of the animals.

13 cats were adopted this month, including 7 adults and 6 kittens!

Dogs:

11 dogs entered the facility.

1 abandoned
0 returns
0 strays
6 surrenders
4 transfers

We did not take in as many dogs this month as at other times during the year. One reason for this is that we have so many amazing dogs available already for adoption.

17 dogs were adopted this month, 7 adults and 10 puppies - that’s more than we took in!

Blog Dog of the Month - Ezy!!

It's that time again! For the month of November we've selected Ezy to be our Blog Dog of the Month! Look familiar? Ezy was also spotlighted in October but unfortunately he is STILL waiting for his forever home and we hope to share more of his story with you throughout the month. This is the first in a series of 3 posts we have planned for this special canine to help him find a family!

Since he entered the facility, our Blog Dog of the Month Ezy (pronounced Easy) has made huge improvements in temperament and training. Ezy came in as a stray, jumping right into his rescuer’s car. He must have known that she was trying to help him, because Ezy can be very shy with new people.

When he first came to HSEC, Ezy wasn’t sure what he’d gotten himself into. The facility can be an overwhelming place, with lots of new sights, sounds, and smells - not to mention new people. Like many new residents, Ezy was initially hesitant to trust volunteers and staff. We don’t know what Ezy’s background was like and so we don’t know why he tends to be so cautious. Whatever the reason, he needs a little extra love to help him compensate.

When Ezy was given a bit of extra attention, he really began to blossom. He made one volunteer into a special friend, and once he’d decided to trust her, he began to realize that other people weren’t so bad. He got used to the set of familiar faces that he saw at the facility every day. Being exposed to so many different people was very beneficial for him.

Like many cautious dogs, having a doggy buddy helped Ezy become more comfortable with people. Shy dogs may have a difficult time reading humans, and so they are alarmed by what they interpret as unpredictable behavior. But when a shy dog has a more confident dog as a buddy, they can read the confident dog’s body language. If the other dog isn’t afraid, the shy dog will see that the situation isn’t threatening, and they will have a large reduction in their own anxiety levels.

Ezy gets along very well with other dogs, and loves to wrestle and play tag. He’s also what trainers call food motivated, which means that he is willing to work for a treat. As soon as he figured out that just sitting would get him a reward, he was on top of it! If he knows that you have treats in your pocket, he will cut you off and “sit” very insistently in front of you, waiting to be praised and rewarded. This makes us think that he would be relatively easy to continue training.

Unfortunately, Ezy has outlasted several doggy buddies because he has been at the facility so long. He’s watched his friends leave for their forever homes and has always been the one left behind. We think it’s Ezy’s turn to get to go home.

13 SPOOK-tacular tips to keep your pets safe this HOWL-oween!

Many dogs and cats thrive on routine, which means that the noise and activity of Halloween can be upsetting and confusing. Furthermore, holiday decorations and parties can pose dangers to your pets.

Keeping your animals safe during Halloween requires just a bit of extra forethought. But by following these thirteen easy and common-sense suggestions, you can make sure that Halloween is fun and stress-free for every member of your family.

Many children can be frightened by overly friendly dogs, and the door opening and closing provides a great opportunity for curious pets to slip outside. Unless they are extremely well behaved, don’t allow your pets to come to the door with you. Instead, keep your dogs and cats in a quiet, secure room with food, water, litter, toys, and a comfortable place to relax.

If the sound of the doorbell is frightening or stimulating to your dog, consider taping a sign over your doorbell asking trick-or-treaters to knock instead.

Urban legends suggest that cats - and black cats specifically - are in danger of being targeted by violence during late October. In reality, the increased danger is slight and is probably the result of local kids’ pranks. However, it certainly won’t harm your indoor/outdoor cats to be kept inside around Halloween. Most cats won’t be thrilled to be outside amidst the chaos of trick-or-treating anyway.

Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats, due to the presence of Theobromine and, to a lesser extent, caffeine. Both compounds are stimulants that can cause nausea, vomiting, and even death. Keep candy bowls out of your animals’ reach and make sure your kids’ goody bags are also untouchable. If you suspect that your dog or cat has ingested chocolate, call your vet.

Decorative corn and pumpkins can also cause stomach upset if consumed, and these decorations should be kept in areas where your pets can’t access them.

Animals should be supervised around decorations. Ensure that your pets aren’t nibbling on wires or other trimmings. Do not leave animals alone with lit candles.

Having a party? It’s always a good idea to keep your pets out of the action in the same quiet room described above.

Speaking of things that animals shouldn’t eat - do not feed pets alcohol or other intoxicants. And don’t let party guests do it either! Cats and most dogs are much smaller than humans and are affected differently by intoxicants.

Pet costumes are adorable! But before you take your dog out on the town, try on the costume and make sure that it’s comfortable for your pet. And if your animal really doesn’t want to wear it, don’t force them. Your pet’s stress and upset is not worth the cute picture.

While your pet is wearing a costume, keep an eye on them to make sure that they are safe - that they aren’t eating the costume, that they can see properly, and that they remain comfortable. If in doubt, take it off.

Some dogs will love to come trick-or-treating, while some will not enjoy the fuss and commotion. If your dog accompanies you, they should be properly leashed and should act like good citizens - no barking or jumping on kids.

It’s a good idea to have reflective patches on your children’s costumes so that cars can see them. Similarly, put reflective patches on your dog’s harness, collar, or leash if they come trick-or-treating with you.

Whether they are staying inside or coming along, dogs and cats should all wear proper identification with your contact information, just in case they wander off. Take this opportunity to look into ID microchips as well. This is a tiny electronic ID inserted under the pet’s skin. They are relatively cheap, painless, and can can help reunite you with your pet if they become lost. Ask your vet for more info about ID microchips.

Black Cat Adoption Stand - Last Day!

Earlier this month we took 6 of our black cats to PetSmart in Greenville for a special black cat adoption stand and today is the last day for this special event! We have had FIVE cats adopted over the past two weeks and there are currently five cats still at PetSmart waiting for their forever homes!

So far we've had two of our long-timer adult cats find homes, Shadow & Brandon, and three kittens, Belle, Aurora, and Jim!

Two adult sister cats named Lucy and Aggie **ADOPTED** who have been with us for a while and would love to go home with YOU! They are about one year old and have been with us for some time so we are really hoping they get adopted during this special event.

Olive a gorgeous calico who is mostly black. This sweet girl has been very shy at Petsmart since her arrival on Wednesday but when she comes out of her shell she can be a real sweetheart!

National Pit Bull Awareness Day 2011

Happy Saturday everyone! Today is a great day for animal rescue, it's National Pit Bull Awareness Day!

Today animal rescue organizations across the country are working together to raise awareness about the struggles and discrimination pit bull terriers face every day and unite against breed specific legislation. For more information please visit Bless The Bullys website about the campaign.

Pit Bulls are one of the most loyal and loving dog breeds, but also the most misunderstood; often associated with fighting and violence, an image the media tends to support. Here at HSEC we'd love to show you just how wonderful pitbulls really are. We currently have 5 pit bull terriers under our care and we'd love to see them get some special recognition today! Below is more specific information about each of our pit bulls so if you have time please stop by the facility any time today between 1-5pm to give them some treats, a nice long walk, or a forever home!

Blossom

This sweet mama has been through a lot. She came to HSEC early in the summer of 2011 with a litter of three pups who have since been adopted. She is one of the absolute sweetest dogs in the world and as you can see from her picture she always has a smile on her face and a wag in her tail! Blossom came to us severly underweight, covered in scratches, and with multiple skin conditions. With some love from the HSEC staff and proper vet care Blossom has bounced back and is ready for her forever home Blossom is definitely a lover, not a fighter! She is at the HSEC facility today so come check her out!

Ginny

Ginny is a gorgeous brindle pit bull who loves attention! She left for a temporary foster home this week to get some extra love but she is still very much available for adoption! Ginny loves to go on long runs and she is also housebroken! Ginny does not get along well with other dogs or cats so we want her to be in a one-pet household. This sweet girl has been waiting a long time to find her forever home and we hope that happens soon :-) ***UPDATE*** Ginny has been adopted!

Hadley

Hadley is the newest bully to join the HSEC pack and unfortunately she is not available for adoption just yet as we finish caring for all of her medical needs. Keep this image in your head though 'cause she's quite a looker! We will keep you posted when Hadley is ready for some love in a new forever home!

Porkchop

Porkchop is currently the only male pit bull at HSEC. He is still a young dog full of puppy energy who greets everyone with a smile! His unique hazel eyes make him even more endearing and we hope you'll come out to take a look at him soon! Porkchop has a classic bully build and when he's full grown is going to be so handsome!

Wiggles

We've saved the best for last!!! Wiggles is one of the friendliest dogs on the planet, we guarantee it! She was rescued this past summer from an animal hording case, but you'd never know it! She is a smaller pit bull but she makes up for it with her amazing jumping skills. Wiggles LOVES to go on walks and when she's done she always has energy left over for lots of hugs and kisses! Wiggles only struggle is that she loves too much, she has separation anxiety when her volunteer and staff friends leave for the night so we hope she'll find a special home with a big family who has lots of time to spend with her!

We prefer to adopt bully breeds to owners with successful previous bully experience. The adoption process for bully breeds involves a home check, vet check and possible reference check. There are no same day adopted for bully breeds. We want to ensure that all our pit bulls find the right homes and the right families. Come meet them today!

All dogs at the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, dewormed, and on heartworm and flea prevention. All dogs 6 months or older are tested for heartworms. Purrfect Post Cat of the Month - Soft

Although most of our black cats are at PetSmart right now, one of our long-time residents, Soft, is still available for adoption at our facility! She is our Purrfect Cat of the Month and we're hoping she finds her forever home soon!

Soft is one of the few senior cats available at HSEC right now, she is approximately seven years old and came to us from an owner who simply had too many pets to care for. Soft has had some trouble adjusting to life at the shelter so she tends to hide as a way to handle her stress. When volunteers come to spend time with her Soft can seem very aprehensive about human attention but just the opposite is true!

First of all, Soft is one of the best crate-trained cats we've ever seen! She is a bigger kitty so rather than try to remove her from her cage by hand when it's time to play or clean our staff know to just put the open crate up to Soft's cage and she climbs right in!

Just the other day we put Soft in our kitty play pen and she had a blast with our Director of Outreach, Katie! It took her a little while to feel comfortable enough to come out of her carrier but once she did Soft was ready for love. She clearly enjoyed the extra attention as Katie was petting her and she didn't mind at all when Katie got a brush out to groom Soft's long lugurious fur!

Black Cat Adoption Stand

In honor of Halloween and the October full moon we've been busy at the Greenville PetSmart since October 10th having a special adoption stand for our black cats! Before we left for the Luv-A-Pet center in Petsmart 59% of our feline residents were black or mostly black, a common trend in shelters. Because black cats are associated with negative stereotypes and can be more difficult to see in their cages they tend to take the longest to find their forever homes.

To combat this trend we took 6 of our loveable black cats to Petsmart and it's been a HUGE success!

So far we've found homes for one all black kitten named Belle, a black and white kitten named Aurora, and one of our long-time residents and all around purrrfect kitties: SHADOW! We are so glad that all of them found their forever homes this week and I'm sure their new owners are raving about the good luck they've had since those black cats crossed their paths!

If you're interested in adopting one of our black cats please stop by the Greenville PetSmart during any of the following times:

Sunday October 16th from 2-5pm

Monday October 17th through Friday October 21st from 5:30-8pm

Saturday October 22nd from 11-5pm

Sunday October 23rd from 2-5pm

One kitten named Jasmin who is mostly black with a smudge of white on her face. She is about 11 weeks old and eagerly awaiting her forever home since her sister Aurora got adopted!

Two adult sister cats names Lucy and Aggie who have been with us for a while and would love to go home with YOU! They are about one year old and have been with us for some time so we are really hoping they get adopted during this special event.

Blog Dog of the Month - Ezy

Hi Folks!

A regular installment on our blog will be the 'Blog Dog of the Month!' In each post we will spotlight the dog who is most in need of adoption at our facility.

This month that lucky dog is Ezy! He has been at HSEC longer than any of our other dogs and we're hoping to help find him a family as soon as possible.

This sweet boy is about 2 years old and was brought in as a stray. The woman who found him called him "Ezy" because when she saw him it was so easy to get him to jump right into her car!

We suspect that Ezy has been with us for a while because it takes him a while to warm up to strangers. When we let him out for exercise in our play yard he tends to shy away from new people but our staff know Ezy has a much friendlier side to him! When we go to let him out he is almost always waiting at his kennel door and once it's open he bolts right out, eager to play.

It takes some patience, but once he warms up to you Ezy loves a good ear rub and will sit calmly while you pet him and give him some loving attention. As you can see, Ezy is a Shepard mix, mostly black with a white chest. He also has some very unique brown and black patches around his sholders which in our opinion make him more loveable!

If you are interested in adopting Ezy and making him a member of your family please let us know! We'd love for you to come out and meet him. Ezy has been neutered, dewormed, and is up to date on all vaccines. He is also on heartworm and flea prevention.

Ezy's adoption fee is only $60 and his new family will inheret all his medical records as well as a small bag of Hill's Science Diet Food!
