Fee Waived Adoptions - Three for Free!

During our birthday celebration last month we introduced you to six lovely and loving dogs and cats, so ready to find homes that we waived their adoption fees. We're just plain tickled to announce that five of those original six have found their forever homes! Congratulations to Blue, Max, Precious, Clooney, and Tess!

With two additions to the fee-waived list, we now have Three for Free - three wonderful dogs with waived adoption fees who can't wait to come home with you - or you - or maybe YOU! Let's meet them!

Hector

Hector the shepherd mix is one of the original six, so he's extra ready to find his forever home! We just love Hector's mischievous smile. This guy is everything a dog should be, friendly, cuddly, and happy-go-lucky. He's quite energetic, and gets along very well with other dogs (though it is not recommended for him to go to a home with cats). Hector is heartworm positive, and takes medication for this condition. Heartworm is very treatable, so don't let that dissuade you if you think that Happy Hector might be the perfect new addition to your pack.

Scout

Scout is a sweet, shy, Carolina dog mix who arrived at HSEC after her owner moved to a pet-free apartment. At first this cute little girl was nervous and wary, but she's starting to come out of her shell in order to accept head scratches! She gets along with other dogs, and she's looking for a home that is a bit more quiet and a bit more patient. With some extra care and attention, we know that Scout will be someone's best friend for life.

Midas

Midas the labrador retriever mix proves that cats aren't the only ones with nine lives! Healthy young Midas was brought in for a "convenience euthanasia" because his owner didn't want to care for him any longer. Luckily, the vet called us! This young dog is energetic and playful and gets along well with humans or canines. He is house and crate trained and knows a few commands. He's ready for his second chance - ready for his forever home!



All dogs with the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina are evaluated for temperament, spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, dewormed, on heartworm and flea prevention and tested for heartworms if one year or older. Their adoption comes with a bag of Hill's Science Diet and one month free trial of pet health insurance from ShelterCare. All dogs four months or older must leave with a collar with their rabies tag as a form of identification. You can either bring your own collar or purchase a collar (priced $2-$10) from HSEC.

Fee-Waived Adoptions: Priceless!

We all know that the love of a pet is priceless, so as our gift to you during our birthday celebration, we are featuring six homeless animals whose adoption is literally priceless!  Their adoption fees have been waived, and they’re ready to move to loving, forever homes.

Blue

Blue is a blog favorite! We have featured the story of this gorgeous pit bull’s abandonment and injury. Well now Blue is all better, and ready for his forever home. He loves sunbathing and chasing bugs, and he is great with kids and other dogs. In addition to being housebroken, Blue has a small repertoire of tricks under his belt. Will YOU be the happy ending to Blue’s story?

Max

Max is a senior cat who was reluctantly owner-surrendered with another cat when the owner moved and was not allowed pets.  This sociable fellow gets along well with other cats, even the bossy cat he came in with. He specializes in head boinks, and loves to be scratched on the side of his face – he even likes to be picked up, cuddled and loved!  If you’re looking to max out your kitty love, come and visit this lovable fellow.

Tess

Sweet tabby Tess wandered onto a kind soul’s property as a stray.  Sadly, the woman’s dogs saw her as a potential snack, so Tess was surrendered to us.   She has had a hard life.  Ear-tipped and spayed as a feral (wild) cat, she has clearly been living outdoors for some time.  Fortunately, her rescuer has sponsored her adoption fee to support her new start in life.  Although a bit skittish, Tess wants to trust humans, and just needs some time and TLC.

Hector

Precious

If you’re seeking a truly precious companion, Precious may be your gal.  This beautiful, sleek black kitty loves to be a lap cat, although at night she turns into the perfect sleeping buddy, curling up in her human’s bed.  Poor Precious arrived when her dad became ill and could no longer care for her.  She’s friendly with visitors and kids, and loves a scratching post.  This sweet gal blossomed in a foster home, but is ready to move on to a lap that is hers alone.

Clooney

And finally, there’s Clooney!  This silver fox is an awesome guy who’s been with us for one of his five years – far too long.  He’s housebroken, and has a face a dog mother can definitely love.  He gets along well with other medium to large dogs, and enjoys play time, but has an unfortunate interest in chasing cats.  Clooney could stand to lose a pound or two, but that doesn’t stop him from thinking he’s a lap dog!  He walks well on a leash, and could join you for some exercise.  He’s ready to walk out of our facility, and into your home.

SCOOTER UPDATE - ADOPTED!!

Friends, we've been sharing some of our successes with you recently, animals that are alive and in loving homes because of your generosity. Now we need your help to create another success.

Scooter is a four year old cat, very sweet and easy going, who loves to rub his head on his favorite people. He's declawed and was raised in a home around other cats. A perfect pet just waiting for a home. But there's one problem: Scooter was recently diagnosed with diabetes.

As in humans, diabetes in cats can be controlled through injections and the monitoring of blood glucose. This treatment is expensive and would tax our little facility beyond its limits.

Scooter needs a home NOW! His adoption fee has been waived. If he has not found a home by February 1st, he will be humanely euthanized. But none of us want to see that happen, as we have all become very fond of this sweet boy.

So please, help us spread the word. Tweet, share, shout it from the rooftops! Scooter needs your help. Please, help us save him. We know you can do incredible things. We've seen it happen before.

UPDATE: Scooter has been adopted! Thank you so much for all of your help in spreading the word. We've never done a 911 blast like this before and it was a learning experience for all of us. Thanks for your patience and enthusiasm as the story progressed.

We're going to let Scooter settle down in his new home (with a repeat HSEC adopter!). And when we get updates, we will be sure to share them with you.

Wordless Wednesday - Rocky

Purrfect Post Blog Cat(s) of the Month - Mavis and Maude

Mavis and Maude are very special ladies. These sisters came into HSEC together, and they're so close that we would love to see them go into a home together. In fact, if you adopt Mavis, you can take Maude for free - or vice versa!

Maude

(Adopting two cats, especially ones that are already friends, doesn't mean twice the work or expense. Take a gander at our post about adopting two cats for more details.)

The girls are about one year old, are both small (around 7lbs) and Mavis has a beautiful solid black coat, while Maude is a gorgeous tortie. They're both just as friendly as can be - the best word we'd use to describe them is 'sweet'. Maude just loves belly rubs, while Mavis prefers head scratchies. They are somewhat shy, and while they would be all right in homes with other pets - they have lived in a home with several cats and a dog - they would probably prefer a quieter setting.

Mavis

One major reason why Mavis and Maude are such a good pair is the gentle care that Maude provides for her sister. Mavis is a special needs kitty, completely blind in one eye and with limited vision in the other. Her vision is not expected to deteriorate further or to need any special medical attention as she gets older - it's just the way she is!

When the sisters are in an unfamiliar place - like our kitty exercise enclosure at the facility - Mavis makes little chirps. Maude responds by chirping back, and Mavis uses the sound to find her sister and cuddle down together for a good catnap. It is the SWEETEST thing. Once in their new home, Mavis may need some time to become used to unfamiliar surroundings, but with Maude to help her out, these sisters will be snuggling on your lap in no time.

All cats with the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina are evaluated for temperament, spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, dewormed, on flea prevention and tested for FIV/FeLV. The adoption fee for adult cats is $70. All cats must leave in a carrier. You can either bring your own or purchase a cardboard carrier for an additional $6.

Deal of the Century: Fee-Waived Adoptions!

We have some exciting news to share today. Seven HSEC residents have just been approved for fee-waived adoptions, which means that there is no cost to take them home with you!

Our adoption fees are designed to cover or defray the costs incurred while the pet is living at the facility - food, medical care, and so on. But these residents have either lived at the facility for more than a year, or they have special needs and will greatly benefit from finding a home right now.

Don't worry - these animals are just as loving and wonderful as any other pet at HSEC. In fact, since we've known them for so long, we've gotten very attached. It's just time for them to move on to their forever homes, which is of course a huge benefit to each animal, but also benefits HSEC since we can use the space for more needy pets.

Remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch. That concept is especially true of a "free" pet. All adopters must meet HSEC requirements.

We're hoping that this is the little extra push these cuties need to find their homes. And maybe they've been waiting so long because you haven't found them yet! Click on the name under each photo to visit that pet's Petfinder page, where you can get more information and see more pictures.

Blossom

Blossom is a true lady, sweet, calm, and friendly. She's mastered the puppy dog eyes, so be warned! She is crate trained and housebroken. This mama sacrificed everything to raise her puppies, and when she arrived at HSEC, she was in bad shape. Now that she's been nursed back to health, she is most comfortable around women but is learning that men are good friends too. She needs to be in a home where she is the only dog - she isn't classically dog aggressive, but she will snap if another dog gets in her face. Our February 2012 Blog Dog of the Month!

Lilly

Lilly is a smart, sociable girl who loves to be outdoors. And doesn't that doggy grin just make you smile? She excelled in foster care, where she learned several commands and had lots of fun camping and canoeing. If you're looking for a dog who will keep up with all your adventures, Lilly's the one for you! Our April 2012 Blog Dog of the Month!

Rocky

In addition to having the world's cutest ears, Rocky is loyal, well-mannered, and easy to please. All he wants is a calm home (preferably one with other dogs to be his friends), a few treats once in a while (cheese is his favorite), and maybe a few toys to play with. Rocky has irritable bowel disease, a condition exacerbated by the stress of living at the facility. When in foster care, the condition went into immediate remission. Read more about IBD here. Rocky is house trained. He's a real favorite at the facility - we've known him since he was a pup, and we're hoping he gets to go home soon! Rocky was featured as a foster success story on the blog in February 2012.

Mona

Mona will always let you know how much she loves you! She's a vocal cat with personality to spare, and her beautiful, silky coat is so wonderful to touch. She loves attention and cuddles. But she doesn't like to share her humans with other cats, and doesn't like to be surrounded by so many felines at the Humane Society. Potential adopters have been mislead by her sulky demeanor, but that's not what she's really like. Give her a treat and some chin scratches, and she's yours forever. Mona needs to be the only cat in her home. Our January 2012 Blog Cat of the Month!

Olive

Olive is a striking girl who loves to play and give head boinks. Pictures don't really do justice to her beautiful and unusual markings, which she keeps exquisitely clean. She's alert and curious (some of her neighbors might say nosy), and will often stick a paw out of her cage to say hello. Olive likes attention on her own terms and needs an understanding family that will give her the affection she wants. Our February 2012 Blog Cat of the Month!

Harriet

Harriet will greet you at the door when you come home and snuggle on your lap every night. She's a beautiful tortie with glowing eyes and is quite the chatterbox, upholding her end of every conversation with purrs and meows. She doesn't always like to be petted, but she loves to be near people and to cuddle up with them. In her foster home, she enjoys limited access to the outdoors, and is available as an indoor/outdoor cat to a home with a safe yard (no busy streets or aggressive dogs nearby). This is the kind of cat who will keep you company when you're sick. Our April 2012 Blog Cat of the Month!

Smokey Joe

Smokey Joe is a laid back, friendly guy who's never met a stranger. He'll greet you with a head boink and just loves to be petted and held. Smokey Joe is FIV positive, a chronic condition that can be managed well with preventative care, and is no barrier to a long and healthy life. Read more about FIV here. Smokey Joe is one of the sweetest cats we've ever had at HSEC. He's looking for someone with a big heart who will look past his diagnosis to see his wonderful personality.
