Summer Stats

*Make sure you tune in on Wednesday - you won't want to miss our next post!*

As we say goodbye to the summer of 2012, let's take a look at our summer stats!

In July and August, we took in 52 animals in total; 32 in July and 20 in August. Our July intake was 14 dogs and 18 cats, while in August we took in 7 dogs, 1 puppy, 4 cats, and 8 kittens. At the end of August, we had 47 animals in our care.

Adoptions in July and August totaled 55! We had 29 adoptions in July and 26 in August. July numbers include 7 dogs, 7 puppies, 4 cats, and 11 kittens. In August, we adopted out 5 dogs, 6 puppies, 6 cats, and 9 kittens.

As always, puppies and kittens go fast! It's hard to resist those cute little faces. We're happy to say that most animals do not remain at the facility for long. The average stay, from intake to adoption, is less than 40 days!

Summer adoptions include:

Kayla and her new owner, HSEC animal care tech Danny

Lilly - after living at HSEC for a year and two months! Featured on the blog.

Olive - featured on the blog

Just the Facts - June Stats

After a quiet May, we had a much more exciting June in terms of adoptions. Summer is usually a low point for adoptions and donations at animal welfare organizations, so we're happy to see this uptick in our numbers. In fact, the first weekend in June we had NINE adoptions - an HSEC record!

In June we took in 32 new residents, 18 cats and 13 dogs. We are still trying to keep our intake low so that we can remain within our budget. The majority of our intake were transfers from organizations like the Pitt County Animal Shelter - 10 cats and 7 dogs. We also accepted 6 cats and 5 dogs surrendered by their owners.

Happily, we almost balanced out our intake with our adoptions - 29 total for June! This included 4 cats and 11 kittens. 7 dogs and 7 puppies also found their forever homes during the month.

Let's take a look at some of the adoptions for this month, as well as two earlier alums. We love when you send in photos!

Hobbes with his new mommy!
At one point, sick little puppies Calvin and Hobbes were minutes from death. Now just look at them, all better and in their forever homes!

Oofie (aka Jemma)

Sammy
When Sammy's new person met him, it was love at first sight. She drove all the way from Pantego to adopt him!

Shorty
Shorty had some behavioral issues and needed a special home. Well, he got it! Shorty's new person Sandra told us on our Facebook page that he has "made her life wonderful in more ways than I can possibly list. Aww! We love a happy ending!

And lastly, here are two more happy endings for HSEC alums adopted before June.

Zoe (aka Sasha)
Zoe was a tiny pup when she left our facility at the end of February. Look at her now at six months! Don't you love that spot over her eye?

Benji
Benji was also a tiny guy when he was adopted. Here he is at four months. Looks like trouble! Those big ears make us think that he's got some more growing to do.

Post your photos of HSEC alums on our Facebook page or send them to us at humanesocietyofec@gmail.com and we'll feature them on the blog!

Just the Facts - May Stats

As always, May was a busy month at HSEC. We're gearing up for our summer events like the Fluff and Puff Dog Wash...

(The first one is TOMORROW, Saturday June 16th, in the Best Buy parking lot, 3140 Evans St Greenville NC from 10-2. Hope to see you there!)

...and as always for this time of year, we have a lot of fuzzy little babies running around. But along with kitten and puppy season, we've seen another seasonal trend - a decrease in adoptions for the month of May. We need your help to get the word out about HSEC so we can avoid these fluctuations as much as possible. Litters of kittens and puppies often need extra attention and care, and your support is crucial during this time.

The good news is that we're already on track in June to exceed those lower May numbers. So let's focus on the positive and take a look at the critters who found their forever homes in May.

This month we took in 20 cats: 3 returns, 6 surrenders, and 11 transfers. We also took in 22 dogs: 2 abandoned (which is ILLEGAL), 4 returns, 9 surrenders, and 7 transfers.

We often take transfers from the Pitt County Animal Shelter. We're so lucky to work in partnership with them! In fact, just yesterday (June 14th) we were able to participate in an amazing rescue effort with PCAS, Pitt Friends, and individual rescuer Jenny Lee. PCAS was unexpectedly inundated with surrendered animals until there was no more room in the shelter. But between the different animal welfare groups, all of the surrendered animals were saved!

We had 18 adoptions in total during May: 5 adult cats, 6 kittens, 5 adult dogs, and 2 puppies. 7 of these were off-site adoptions. As you can see from our discrepancies between intake and adoption, we're pretty full right now! As much as we love to be surrounded by those adorable little faces, we can't wait to see those numbers drop as pets find their forever homes.

Here are some of the lucky guys who found their homes in May!

Just the Facts - March and April

It seems like the past few months have flown by, and all of a sudden we're right around the corner from summer. Our freshly painted Cat Palace is looking great, and a beautiful mural has just been finished - we'll be sure to share pictures as soon as we have them.

Adoptions generally slow down a little bit during the summer months, but during March and April we've had quite a few to celebrate.

In March we took in 32 animals in total - 19 cats and 13 dogs. And just to keep things nice and symmetrical, we've adopted out 32! This includes 9 adult cats, 6 kittens, 10 adult dogs, and 7 puppies. 9 of these adoptions were off-site.

In April, we took in 23 animals, 9 cats and 14 dogs. But again with that magic number, we adopted out 32 - 11 adult cats, 3 kittens, 10 adult dogs, and 8 puppies. 8 of these adoptions were off-site.

It was wonderful to see so many animals go off to their forever homes, and this opens up more space in our facility to transfer in more critters. Remember, when you adopt a pet from a no-kill operation, you're not just giving that animal a home. You're also opening a space for another unwanted animal in the facility. You're saving TWO lives - and providing the no-kill facility with the funds to continue operating. Thank you!

So without further ado let's take a look at some of the sweet guys that found their forever homes in March and April!

Just the facts please - January 2012 stats

January was an interesting month for HSEC. Because we have (for now) reduced intake so that we can decrease the number of residents at the facility, we only took in 10 new animals, and we adopted out 23. 30% of our adoptions were off-site this month.

We've decreased the number of our residents due to financial constraints, which you can read more about in this post. The decrease is intended to be temporary, and we would greatly appreciate your continued support so that we can return to full operating capacity.

Here’s the breakdown for January:

Cats:
7 cats entered the facility.
  • 4 abandoned
  • 1 return
  • 0 strays
  • 2 surrenders
  • 0 transfers
It was a big month for kitty adoptions! 19 cats were adopted this month, including 9 adults and 10 kittens.

Kitty adoptions included:

Nook - in her new home!

Lucy (our December Purrfect Post Cat!)

Bear - in her new home!
Dogs:
3 dogs entered the facility, all returns.

4 dogs were adopted this month, all adults, including:

Kona (AKA Brownie) - in her new home!

Pluto - in his new home!

Congratulations to all the dogs and cats who found their forever homes this month! And if you’re one of the lucky new owners, we always love to hear how our former residents are doing! Post a photo of your little guy on our Facebook page.
